1. Check the law before you start
Make sure you can legally do the project on your own. Your local authority may require permits for large projects or a licensed professional to do certain parts of a job. Safety issues, such as hazardous materials and knowledge of bearing walls, structural issues and utility connections, must also be considered.
2. Plan first
We know planning is boring, but it’s the first step you have to take when starting a DIY project or any project for that matter. It saves you time in the long run, helps you think the job through, make all of the difficult decisions, and gets together everything you need before you start working.
If you plan on redoing a room, decide how far you’re willing to go. You can repaint a room for cheap, but add some new wallpaper and you’ll be doubling the amount you spend. The choice is yours, but be sure you know what you’re getting into before you have an unfinished project and a big hole in your pocket.
4. Make a file

5. Plan your time
Your time is the only free part of your project, but you still have to figure out how much of it is needed for the job. Don’t underestimate how long a project will take. Just preparing a room, clearing furniture, taking things down, patching up any damage, covering or stripping the carpet and so on – could take at least a day to accomplish. You’ll feel much better if you set a realistic timetable and are able to stick to it after your project has started. No one likes a job that drags on when you thought it would only take a few hours.
6. Get organized
Last, but certainly not least, make sure you know exactly what you’re up against. For example, a bathroom could involve replacing wall tiles, painting, and woodwork.
